After the 2018 shooting in Parkland, FL at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, my friend Mark Sonnenblick wrote music to lyrics written by 2 theater students of the school: Ashley Paseltiner and Molly Reichard. I recorded the vocals, we gifted the recording to them, then found out shortly after that HBO was making a documentary about the shooting ("Song of Parkland") and our song would be featured.
And then, if all that wasn't enough, our song was nominated for a 2019 Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
This is a demo, "Here I Come Running", was recorded in my home studio. It's from a new musical by my friend Ben Caplan --
"What I Wanted to Say When I Said I Love You" is a short musical about two unnamed friends with benefits, a young man and a young woman, who each believes the other treats them poorly but are worried that no one else will want them. Eventually, when it seems like they are finally going to free themselves and break up, they instead resign themselves to saying, "I love you," lengthening and deepening the cycle of their mutually toxic relationship.
